Combien de fois n’ai-je entendu : \u00ab J\u2019ai appris qu\u2019il ne fallait pas mettre d\u2019accents sur les mots en capitales \u00bb. C\u2019\u00e9tait vrai\u2026 au temps de la machine \u00e0 \u00e9crire. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, il n\u2019existait pas de \u00ab barres \u00e0 caract\u00e8re \u00bb contenant les capitales accentu\u00e9es (voir l\u2019article Wikip\u00e9dia sur la machine \u00e0 \u00e9crire<\/a>). Il \u00e9tait donc impossible d\u2019avoir une capitale accentu\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Avec les logiciels de traitement de texte actuels, ce n\u2019est plus du tout d\u2019actualit\u00e9. Tout logiciel qui se respecte doit avoir un menu sp\u00e9cifique qui permet d\u2019ajouter des caract\u00e8res sp\u00e9ciaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Petit rappel concernant la capitale et la majuscule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

La capitale<\/strong> est la casse \u00e0 utiliser pour composer en \u00ab grandes lettres \u00bb. Ainsi, le glyphe (trac\u00e9 apparent du caract\u00e8re) \u2039 B \u203a est la capitale de \u2039 b \u203a dans l\u2019alphabet latin, de \u2039 \u03b2 \u203a dans l\u2019alphabet grec et de \u2039 \u0432 \u203a dans l\u2019alphabet cyrillique. Le trac\u00e9 des capitales, que l\u2019on oppose aux minuscules, diff\u00e8re tr\u00e8s souvent non seulement par le glyphe mais aussi par l\u2019\u0153il.
La majuscule<\/strong> (du latin majuscula<\/em>, \u00ab un peu plus grande \u00bb) est un caract\u00e8re situ\u00e9 au d\u00e9but de certains mots. Chaque langue en fixe l\u2019usage. Le plus souvent, mais pas exclusivement, les majuscules sont repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es par des capitales (d\u2019o\u00f9 la confusion). Certains types de caract\u00e8res, comme la famille des gothiques qui reproduisent des mod\u00e8les du Moyen \u00c2ge, proposent en fait des bas-de-casse qui servent pour \u00e9crire le texte, et des \u00ab capitales \u00bb qui ne sont que des majuscules, dans la mesure o\u00f9 on n\u2019\u00e9crit pas des mots entiers. La plupart des \u00e9critures manuscrites ou des typographies qui en reprennent le principe n\u2019ont pas de capitales, mais des majuscules. Ceci dit, si vous parlez \u00e0 un graphiste de majuscules<\/em> ou de capitales<\/em>, il comprendra\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pourquoi faut-il accentuer les capitales ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

En fran\u00e7ais, l\u2019accent a pleine valeur orthographique. Son absence ralentit la lecture et fait h\u00e9siter sur la prononciation, sur le sens m\u00eame de nombreux mots. Aussi convient-il de s\u2019opposer \u00e0 la tendance qui, sous pr\u00e9texte de modernisme, en fait par \u00e9conomie de composition, pr\u00f4ne la suppression des accents sur les lettres capitales.
